Holden Caulfield: America's First Teenager

National Public Radio recently began a series on famous American fictional characters. They have studied characters such as the Lone Ranger, Bugs Bunny, and Lassie. Discussions probe into the nature of their characters and why that have had an enduring place in the American mind.

It just so happened this weekend that I heard their latest installment about--who else?--Holden Caulfield. Reading The Catcher in the Rye has been a rite of passage for high school students for decades since its publication in 1951. One commentator on NPR calls Holden the first "teenager" in American literature because before the end of World War II, American culture did not recognize the teenager years as a distinct time in a person's life.

Click the link here, read the material you find, and listen to the interviews. Then, considering both the interviews and your own encounters with Holden so far, write a thorough and thoughtful response to the prompt:

"Why has Holden been such an important and enduring figure in American culture?"

Post your response as a comment to this post by the end of advisement on Monday, January 28.

Holden Caulfield was introduced into this world by way of a book. In 1951 a negative and hormonal boy became the spokesman for teen angst. Holden Caulfield was the voice of a generation before Kurt Cobain was ever even born. Many teenagers can relate to Holden due to his thoughts and actions such as judging people and being some what of a hypocrit. It doesnt matter if your a boy or a girl, Every body can relate to him because he is the worlds first teenager and he follows every cliché that could possibly even be related to growing up and being a kid

Holden Caulfield has made a huge impact in this world. he basically sent the time in a persons life between adult and child. this stage is being a teenager. in the article it says how before world war 2 there was no teenage time period. after this book was written it became the starting point for every young adult that isn't a child, but isn't a adult. a new name for them, teenager. Holden sets the high for all of us. like most average teens we just don't want to grow up. or maybe we do. but if you really look at how Holden sees life and everyone around him, he is a prime example of all of us.

Holden has been an important and enduring figure in American Culture because he in truth was America’s first teenager. While this may not make sense, if you really think about it it does because before Holden’s time era, you went from being a child to an adult. There was no step in the middle. In the book, the way Holden acts shows that he is afraid of going on from where he is now, afraid of growing up. This shows that he is an important figure in American culture because a majority of teenagers are afraid of this same thing, yet are afraid to admit it. He shows us his enduring side by the way he acts. You can tell that loosing Allie affected his life a lot, but he puts on a brave face and pretends that everything is fine.

Holden Caulfield has been such an important and enduring figure in American culture. He is continually described as "America's first teenager". Before the 1940s, there was no such thing as a time in your life where you are referred to as a teenager. In the post-war 1950s, this teenager label really started to come into existence. Holden, living in this time era, had no aid or advice about the things he is going through. He desperately tries to deal with these situations as an adult, when truthfully, he is still a child. He had no-one to look up to or to follow because they were all either children or adults. The death of his beloved brother, Allie, took a large toll on Holden's emotions and outlook on life. Holden, essentially, comes out of this tragedy, alive and an unchanged person. Many people would grow and learn from experiences such as this one. Holden is stuck in between wanting to become an adult and being forced to stay a child. He is a phenomenal role model for the new teenage era when the book was first published and even for now. He went through many hard times and little help from his peers. Teenagers and adults, for decades to come, will realize Holden has been such an enduring and important figure in American culture.

The reason of why Holden Caulfield was an influential character in the American culture was because of he actually interacted with people who were confused between the age state of childhood and adulthood. Caulfield is just a normal teenager who just has a stinky attitude about almost everybody and everything after a while of experiencing with it. Like almost everyone’s scared of changes in their life, once it’s changed, then you have to get use to it one more time. But like it was said in the book that his brother Allie was a big part of his life and when Allie died and Holden Caulfield was pissed at the world because of Allie’s death. But that made him appreciate what he has left like his sister, Phoebe. Being stuck as a child when you’re eager to become an adult but was forced to stay as a little good kid would drive anybody crazy. He expressed of what most American teenager’s attitude towards life of getting out their safe zone into the adulthood and that’s why America culture accepted him as the most influential teenager at his time.

Holden Caulfield is the poster child for teenage hardship and frustration. He is the perfect example of the teenage conflict; being stuck between childhood and adulthood. The eagerness to grow up and enjoy life without the limitations that plague teenage life, but also a reluctance to leave your childhood behind. Holden has an intolerance for the façade people manage to poorly maintain in public. He gets extremely bewildered when he sees how phony people are when they interact with each other; this is something we’ve all learned to grow accustomed to, whether we like it or not.
Holden Caulfield has been such an enduring figure in American culture because everyone can identify with him on some level. High School students who read The Catcher in the Rye are often at the pinnacle of teenaged uncertainty, so they can relate to the frustration Holden is faced with. Adults who re-read the story get a whole different view. They may remember the time when they had to bumble their way through young-adulthood , but can no longer relate to the story in quite the same way. As an adult, Holden’s intense sorrow becomes much more apparent because your no longer distracted by your disdain for the adult world. So after being thrown into adulthood, you get the chance to relate to Holden on an entirely different set of levels.
Years from now, you may remember Holden Caulfield as an endearing character who helped you through your teenage times of turmoil, or maybe just as someone you felt like punching in the face for complaining too much. Regardless, he will be remembered.

Houlden Caulfield is a very important and enduring figure in American culture in a lot many ways. He resembles the now teenage figure every person has gone through or is going through today. After failing out of his boarding school and now lost on the streets of New York City he isconfused as to where he belongs in the world. Already being obsessed with phony’s he comes to the point where everyone around him is phony and that starts to become a harsh reality in his mind. Being stuck in the time era of the early 1940’s and then exploding into the post-war the culture of “Teens” was not yet invented. Being stuck in the unknown of Child and adult hood, many people like Houlden had no where to be defined and had no real purpose. Teenagers were just beginning to find a culture of there own. Houlden's teacher Mr. Antolini tells Houlden that he is riding for a terrible fall and he is looking for something that his environment can’t provide for him. Houlden is confused about embarking in the new world. At his age many teenagers can relate to what Houlden is going through. Right now in his stage of life he is somewhat depressed. His brother died and now looking for help in his sister phobie he is lost. He prays to his brother to not let him fall and be forgotten. There is terror there. He is a naked soul and every fault and flaw becomes magnified. He is a voice that wants to be heard but can’t be. He’s stuck in a generation of indecisive children and "know it all" Adults. Houlden is the example of the first teenager and his character is embedded in such a good voice of literature to which all of us can relate. He is your typical teenage boy who is yearning and trapped between two worlds. and every teenager can relate to what our very frist teenager Houlden Caulfield is going through.

Holden Caulfield has been a very important and influential person in American culture for the past 50 or so years. He was introduced to the world by J.D. Salinger in 1951. It was then that he became “America’s First Teenager". He was the first example of the period of your life when you are not a child, but are not yet an adult. He was the first person that we teenagers, boy or girl, could relate to. He experienced many things that are natural to this stage of your life. No character real or fictional before Holden can say this. He created a critically important view for many stories that life before him had been missing. Holden had the attitude and view on life that is very unique and is found only at this stage of a person’s life. He became the voice for not only his generation but many to come; Holden Caulfield will be remembered for a very long time, maybe even forever as “America’s First Teenager”.

Holden Caulfield, a teenage boy who narrates a magnificent story named the Catcher and the Rye. This story has been described as one of the most influential books about the teenage life. This is Holden’s story about being expelled from boarding school, and the problems that occur afterwards in New York. Holden draws in his readers by his witty humor, and teenage slang. He is faced with problems of the world, which emotionally connects him with today’s teenagers and adults. Holden is stuck in the world between a child and an adult. He is determined to act like an adult, but behind that determination he results back to childhood. It has been over fifty years, and still this story is influencing people to look past their problems… just as Holden did.

Holden Caulfield is not only an average teenage boy but also a very inspritional legend. He is a huge part of American Culture. In his life, he is forced to be stuck between an adult and a child. In his book, Catcher in the Rye, he is very negative, but at the same time he is very influential. With the death of his brother, he comes out unchanged. He moves on with his life and is stuck between growing up to be and adult but when in reality he is still a child. The moral of the story is to show people that they can move on with their problems. Its been 50+ years and the story still lives on.

Holden Caulfield has become an important and enduring figure in American culture because we all can relate to him. His story has something in common with every teenager. All teenagers reach the point that Holden is in where we are stuck in the awkward position of not being a child and not yet being an adult. He has the same feelings and thinks about the same things any teenager would think about at this age. Holden is considered America’s first teenager because it was the first time someone this age was accurately represented. He has been and is an enduring figure in the American culture because teenagers fifty years ago went through and thought about the very same things that the teenagers do today, and it will be the same for the teenagers in the future. Even though the times have changed since this book was written, the one thing that won’t change is your everyday teenager like Holden Caulfield.

Around the time this book had first been introduced to the public there hadn’t really been any teenagers before. Children had really just gone straight from childhood to being an adult. Holden Caulfield has been such an important and enduring character in the American culture because his character really showed the first existence of a teenager. Teens throughout different generations have really been able to relate to Holden. He’s caught in the world between being a child and an adult. He’s afraid to grow up and is not concerned with his future, as many teenagers are today. He is insecure, and considers just about everyone around him a phony. Holden Caulfield is viewed to many as America’s first teenager. Although he is not a real person, he represents that missing stage leading children to becoming adults.

Listening to the interviews and thinking of what I have read so far in the book I have come to the conclusion that Holden is a very real person, just like any other American teenage guy. He has his moments of picking on other guys his age and he has his moments of wanting to be gone he is so sad. When Holden gets expelled from school I think he did what any other teen would do, he didn’t tell his parents because he knew his mother would be very angry with him if she found out, so he waited as long as he could and that would be when he was home for Christmas break. While waiting to go home he decided to go stay in New York City for the weekend. While he is there he acts like anyone would he does things he is not suppose to do, says things he is not suppose to say. Sticking with the American tennage guy way of life. This is why I think Holden is still a big figure in American culture today.

Holden: a teenage boy in our industrial world. Holden was a boy of his time we all can relate to the hardships of our overly dramatic lifestyles but our only difference with Holden is our generation versus his. We live with our ipods our cellphones this is even typed on a computer but really none of that matters unless your an overly materialistic person. Holden is our American teenage cause he suffers our problems. When can you honestly say during your teen years you haven't had to deal with something where someone either needs you to be a mature calm and understanding adult. As well as corresponding to where an adult see you wrong were your just an overactive child in there eyes. Holden has the true example of this and to when you can have fun in your life and when you have to be serious and know what really matters. Holden existed before a time of huge self expression he had to actually deal with this and i think that is what seems to make him our American hero our American first teen. We still have to suffer many of Holden's problem to date but with our society we hide them behind our items and greed to make everything seem ok. Every teen in our life will deal with the same problems as Holden did it's all how we deal with our frustration that matters.

Holden Caulfield from "The Catcher In The Rye" has had a big effect on American culture since it's release. Before this book was written the adolescant kids were never thought of as "Teenagers", they were children turning into adults. But in this book Holden hates the whole process of becoming an adult and he really isn't liking life at this age. He is going through hormonal and physical changes that causes him to rebel against society. Anyone who has ever been a teenager can relate to Holden about being lost and annoyed by these rough years in life, which is why this book has influenced american culture about teenage years.

i think that holden is a good example of America's first teenager because really he is just like every teenager now. Before this book was made, there weren't really any books that's main character was a teenager. that's why this book made holden so famous. it made america realize that there is a lot more to people in their teens than they think. before WW2 teenager wasn't really considered anything besides someone between adulthood and childhood. Holden made it a point that a lot more goes on than people think, and it is an important transition between childhood and adulthood.

Honestly I must concur with the decloation of Holden Caulfield being a teenager. I truly belive that he is the first reconized teenger in American Culture. As I read through the background information, it seemed ti me that J.D. Salinger is the first person of that ers to reconize the ockward attemp to be an adult while one is still a child, in their parents eye. But what struck me the most is that the author seems to let Holden to settle for the spot inbetween the two. Thus we reconize Holden Caulfied being a 'teenager'. Obviously we know that their were teenagers before this time, well they have been ther since time began, duhh. However when adults read this noela as well as other people it was like watching a bad habit they have, they instantly pick it out and unintentally fix it from there on out. Many probaly did not like this idea because of this idea, teens were now gien respect from some adlts and a lot thought that they were probably too young to do so.

Holden Caulfield has been an important character in American culture because he was the first fictional character to play the role of a teenager. He was the one who set the standards and separated the children from the adults. He established a time of angst and devastation, confusion and yearning that the teens of today still live with. Holden Caulfield is a relatable character that no matter your history, you have at some point felt the way he has. I think that Holden has been such an enduring figure in the American culture because he was one of the bases the culture today.

Holden has been such an important and enduring figure in American culture because of his experience that he went through durning the weekend in New York and even before that. In the book and what people said in the article Holden was in the middle of growing up,trying to experience life but kind of not wanting too. The reason that he is such a important "Teenager" in American Culture is because the book gives us an example of what he went through durning the 1950s when the word "Teenager" wasn't really established the world was but really had no meaning. In the book "The Catcher in the Rye" kind of explains what holden went though for the period of being a child to becoming an adult. Not only is Holden an example of a teenager but maybe even a role model.

5 Brandon Droz said...

Holden was really the first American teenager because every teenager in this world today can relate to him. For example his choice of vocabulary is somewhat discrete and pretty much every normal teenager talks the same way as Holden. He also likes to lie alot. Most teens who want to get out of things lie. He can voice his way through anything and can become a leader like the future American leaders, the teens today. Thats why Holden is the real American teen.

8 Andi Roundy said...

Holden Caulfield was important American figure. He was the start of teenage culture. Caulfield was being a jerk and pushing the limits of what authority figures had laid down. He was trying to establish a boundary between childhood and adulthood. This is the base for teenagers. And Holden was afraid to grow up so there was a middle ground he was trying to create. So that’s why Holden Caulfield was the First American Teenager.

3 erik kleiner said...

He is an American teenager because he is like most teens. He likes to do most of the same stuff like hang out and go to sporting events. He also gets average grades and he lies about stuff that doesn’t really matter like his age and what he likes to do. That is why Holden is the American teenager.

Holden Shows an important step in American history. He shows the step from being a child going to be an adult. In the past befor World War 2 children just kinda became adults with out any step in between. Holden shows a stage that is now very ordanary for our socitey. Holden shows the step of not wanting to be a compleat adult and at the same time not wanting to be a little kid any more. We now call them the Teen-age years. Holden is in one of the first books "The Catcher in The Riy" that expresses this stage

After reading the article i would say Holden was a big impact on society. I would say he was a big impact cause he was basically the start of the teenagers. because he acts like any teenager would today. in the article it said that before world war two there was no teenage time period and being the first teenager he had no help because he was the one to find out how to make being a teenager easier. after reading the article you can see how he started the teenage life.

"Why has Holden been such an important and enduring figure in American culture?"

Holden Caulfield in my opinion has been such an impact on society because he is the Typical All-American Clean cut teenager. Since it describes him as being the first teenager after WWII, he is caught between Childhood and Adulthood. Through out this novel he is trying to make the wisest decisions to make it through every day life, with his occasional mishaps and judgmental views towards some people, not knowing any better. In some ways he can be a role model to other teens, showing that, if you act smart you can make it through an average day.

He has impacted everyone because his life can truely compare to the ones of teenagers. Struggling to grow up and struggling to leave childhood behind.

Holden Caulfield was needed to be introduced into this world. And we got the chance to learn about him from a great book. He would like to speak his mind, which I honestly think is a really good thing. But to some other people, it might be a bad thing. He remindes me of a lot of people in the world today. He gossips about a lot of people, or just thinks about them. A lot of kids/ teenagers do that today. He does things that teens do today also liek the smoking scene. Not the best idea, but it was what he liked and there were some things that he chose to do. So, it was definitley a good idea to introduce him into this fun filled story, so we can really get to know him!

Holden has been such a important and enduring figure in American history because he goes through what a lot of kids his age end up going through when they get to that spot were they are growing to be adults but are not quite there yet. In a way they are showing you how not to be when you get to that point in life. By using Holden in this book it shows how your life can be totally messed up if you don’t apply yourself right.

i believe that Holden is the symbol of teen angst
he represents those of us who don't really have a
place to fit in. He is one of those kids who doesn't
care too much about what people think of him and
is very adult in that sense but on the other hand he
is still trying to deal with the troubles of being a
child. He made an impact on this world because he
provided a chance to view the mind of a "troubled"
teen and shown a new light on the difficulties of being
a teenager in this world.

Holdin is the teenager. The one the only. He was the first and nothing else came along for a while afterwards. Every one has been there every on was once 16. So every one can relate simple as that every one can relate. He has kind of hit a nerve with every one that has read the book which then in turn makes him famous and important. People feel less alone if they know that some one else feels the same way they do and that is where the relationship between readers and characters comes along.

Holden Caulfield is a very important Icon for a teenager because when the book the catcher in the eye first came out in 1951, which was right after WWII. After WWII is when the ages 13 to 18 started to be considered the “teenage years”. Holden represents what a lot of teenagers go through at the age of 16. Which is starting to get more and more responsibility and also going through peer pressure like being a virgin. Also school starts getting harder and Holden ends up getting kicked out. Holden and many teenagers at that age start to want to have the freedom of wanting to live by them self’s and not live with their parents. In the book The Catcher In The Eye Holden Caulfield is a great representation of a teenager and what they go through at the period of their life.

Holden Caulfield: America's First Teenager

Holden Caulfield is considered Americas First Teenager because he is the first one to be in the middle of life. He is one of the first ones to have that part in life were he is not a child but he is not an adult either. You are probably wondering what I am talking about. Your probably saying that people before him were in there teens and that may be true but this book came out before the end of world war two and when you were born back then you were already fighting in the wars at a young age because of world war one and war world two. So Holden is in a part in his life were he doesn’t want to become an adult yet but he isn’t a child any more either. He is the first one to be in between the two parts of life.

In his book J.D Salinger looks at Holden Caulfield, a 16 year old that just got kicked out of a prep school. Back in those days the teenagers might have been expected to act like adults when they got into highschool. Holden is pretty much a rebel in and an outcast, he also doesn't know where to place himself in sociality. He goes around in newyork wanting to do everything that a adult does, but he still sometimes acts like hes 13. When he is in the lavender room he trys to order a alcoholic drink and the waiter nows that he's not 21, and after he makes himself look even younger by trying to get the waiter to put in something in his coke, and pretty much admiting that he is under age. As holden is going around in new york he thinks he is cool and the hottest guy around, but when someone he nows sees him they treat him like a small child.

Holden Caulfield is an important teenage icon because when the book catcher in the Rye was written there was no really time like teenage years. Yes there was a time between the ages of 13-18 but you would still be called a child. Holden goes thought a lot of what teenagers at 16 years old go thought like flunking out of school and hanging out in New York. He does not want to grow up because to him grown ups are phony like must of us think. Some other things that he goes thought and so do must teens his age are drinking going to a bar and not getting an alcoholic drink. He smokes because he thinks that is cool and he will become cooler like a lot of teens do now. He is the first teenager for all those reasons he is the first shot kids his age during that time to start becoming independent and not so much under there parents rules.

After reading the article and thinking about how Holden has been so far, i have come to the conclusion that Holden is such an important and enduring figure in American culture for this reason. Before The Catcher in the Rye, America only really looked at teenagers as just another stepping stone in life that everyone goes through that wasn't different from any other, but really a teenager is a point where you have completely missed a stone and are standing in the muck in between. I say this because the teenage years are really a confused time in everyones life where they are longing to take that step to adulthood but are afraid to take their foot off the childhood making them stuck in the middle. So when America began reading this book they realized through Holden that the teenage years were not really a stepping stone but a confused time between adulthood and childhood. This makes Holden Americas first teenager because he is the first person makes people see what teenagers really are.

Holden Caufield has been an impotant and enduring figure in American culture because he has been through a very hard struggle, loosing his brother. Some of us can only imagine what that is like. He seemed to of grown up a little since that incident. He became more protective of his little sister. He does not want to go through the same thing with his sister. He with then have no siblings. Holden is just like every other regular teenager climing obstacles and at times scared to go to the top. Every teen is also afraid of change and sees the world completly diiferent. Holden sees "phony's" ... There's one in all of us. He doenst want to grow up just yet, he wants to live the young life as long as he can because its what he knows and seems to be piece of cake to him. I think that he is more scared of what he will become and what is to come. One day he will overcome his fears and let it go. This book is something that teens should read if your a little lost in growing up or scared to. I know there is going to be a good ending and lesson at the end of the book.

Holden Caulfield has been titled the role of Americans first teenager. Holden Caulfield is probably one of the most important characters in the history of teens. Before 1951 there was no name for the middle part between child and adult hood. It was just an empty gap, of a group of people all their own. Holden was the birth of the teenager’s acknowledgement. He, representing the teen both with how he looks and how he acts. His hair for example is gray in some places but full of natural color in others, which represents the weary fatigue of adult hood, but at the same time the bright fruitful youth. This is also shown in his actions, like him smoking and drinking, as if he wanted to be an adult, but in another way acting quite childish, its as if he is torn between the two; a hybrid of the two groups… almost like two different sides of him. then again that’s what most teenagers are, just stuck in the middle.

Holden was so important and insipring because he represents american society back days of old. Holden was an iconic figure because he was the person who you can relate to because he is so real and down to earth. He has pet peeves just like anyone else and isnt scared to confront his problems.

Holden Caulfield has been an important person to teens because with the things that he went through durning the weekend he spent in New York he showed us that just because you're not an adult it doesn't mean you're a child. Holden was growing up but not entirly. In the interveiw they showed us what the time of being a child and becoming an adult is really like.

after world war two the character Holden caulfield was created. Along with the character there was a new stage of life created. The new stage wasn't a child and wasn't an adult but was a stage in between called being a teenager. Holden caulfiled shows both child like and adult like cualities which has set a new example that has been passed on from the time of Holden caulfiled to now.

holden is in a stage where he's not an adult or a child, his views are dimented, he doesn't act like he's fully mature. This is the way all teens act. We can relate to him by seeing him act like he does.

I think that Holden Caufield was sort of an example for how most american teenagers really are and what they experience. He is the poster-child for how teenagers judge people. He describes how we feel sometimes when we are down, he often takes things too far, like most teenagers would. I'm sure if every single person looked back to their teen life, they could make a connection to Holden, and that is why he is america's first teenager

Holden Caulfield is named "Americas First Teenager" because of what he endured in Catcher in the Rye. At this time in the world, the phrase teenager has not yet caught on and Holden is really the first to start the general antics of teenagers today. I think that Holden partially believes that he is more mature or adult-like than his fellow teenagers, but at the same time, he seems scared to become an adult himself. This is a common habit among teens which further proves him to be americas first teenager

Holden has made an impact on the way teenagers are viewed today. He is siad to be Americas first teenager because he is starting to go through what present- day teenagers face everyday.. the line between childhood and adulthood. We all get to a point in our lives where your too old to go back and too young to move forward and you feel lost in time. Holden expresses it by trying to find his independance and doing whatever it takes to get there.

Holden had a huge impact because before WW2 there weren't any real teens. So when the book came out he was considered the first teen. He had such a big impact because his life was almost the same as people went through then and now. And he shows what some teens are going through in this stage of there life.
